(Which is excellent by the way). He got me thinking about my childhood and thinking about it, I realize that it was the most extraordinary time of my life. It was the decade of the 60's. We grew up in the city, so we were never short on entertainment. The world was changing all around us but life on Yale Avenue continued to be complacent.

I loved the fact that we were able to play outside until after dark. We didn't have to worry about some sex crazed lunatic coming and kidnapping us. We could walk down the alley alone without a worry.

A trip to the local "little store" was a treat in itself. For a 25cents we could get a bag full of penny candy along with a bottle of pop. Now it costs a dollar just for a Coke and the penny candy has gone by way of the horse and buggy.

Everyone knew everyone on our street. Everyone looked out for everyone too. Nowadays you are lucky to even know your nextdoor neighbor's name.

I occasionally like to reminisce about the days of childhood. They were good. For me anyway. I was lucky in that I had great parents, the best Gram ever, and an older brother I could rely on if I needed. And as far as friends, I had the best. I know some are gone now but I will never forget any of them.

On a message board of the old neighborhood, someone asked the question if you could go back, what would you do? I just said that I wanted to spend one more week with everyone that I knew in those days, and just tell them how much they meant to me and that I will always carry them in my heart no matter where life takes me.

The picture above is me(on the bike) and my next door neighbor Davey in 1961. We were about 3.

March 14

Today is March 14th. She was abandoned with her brother back in August. My husband began feeding them because they were literally starving to death. The kittens also had no shelter to go to. There is a drainage ditch but when it rained, and being out in the wide open, with the fierce wind the poor kittens had nowhere to go.

To make a long story short, my husband had to go to Chicago for work and left me with the kittens to feed. So off I would drive to the park to feed them. I noticed the little girl was limping. Her front paw was injured. She needed a vet. But I still couldn't get her. After a week or so, her leg got worse and she got slower. So I picked her up and brought her home. I called the vet and she was taken immediately. She spent the night and the next day she was spayed, had her foot cleaned(it was abcessed), and she got her rabies shot.
The kitten who we named Daisy is now resting comfortably in her crate. Her stiches will come out next week. I don't know anyone who will take her and I cannot turn her loose. She would not survive. She has permanant damage to her leg and will probably always limp. So it looks like I have another cat. This makes #7.
Her brother went missing a few weeks ago. I am hoping he found a home. Hoping.

Is Winter Over Yet?

Guess who emerged from her winter sleep? She is an Eastern Box Turtle. She adopted my family and I. I'm not sure on how old she is, but I would guess about 3 or 4. This week we are going to build her a little house she can go in during bad weather. I am also going to buy some top soil and mulch so she can hibernate properly. There is a wonderful forum all about turtles called what else? The Turtle Forum! And it is loaded with tons of information and turtle experts to help me in this new relationship.

Tortellini also has a wading pool that I dug out for her. I haven't seen her in it yet though. Maybe she uses it when no one is looking. She might be a shy turtle. I hope she stays with us a long while. I have gotten quite used to her being around. I think I love her.

Turtle

We have a new edition to our backyard. The older I get the more I dislike the heat. I hate that sweaty sticky feel. Bugs all over the place. It is on Halloween so I dressed him as Pete Townshend. I made the guitar resemble Pete's. I chose the number 3 as it was Peter's 3rd birthday. The shirt underneath is a Who shirt I made for him. He also had a Clash shirt then. For a 3 year old he had pretty good taste in music. Still does btw.

Father's Day

This Sunday is Father's day. My Dad is no longer with us. He passed in 1977. But I would like to remember him on this blog on this day of recognition.

He was a great dad. I was lucky to have him as a father. He worked hard to make sure my brother and I had what we needed. He took us to the White Sox games and to the woods for picnics with the family. They would last the whole day long. Great memories!

He was the best cook too. Especially when grilling outside. He didn't have a fancy grill. Just an ordinary round one with a lever that you could raise the grate up and down with. It was quite primitive compared to the grills of today. I don't think anyone with one of those fancy grills could match my dad's porkchops.

Though my memories are all that is left. I must say that they are great memories. I wouldn't trade them for a million dollars.
Happy Father's Day Dad! In October I will be on my way to Sweden. I had to choose either going there or seeing The Who. I picked Sweden because that is where part of my family is, and really, they are more important to me. Now don't get me wrong, I love The Who as much as the next girl, but I love my kid more. And I have already seen The Who quite a few times. I figure let someone else have my ticket who hasn't seen them as yet. I know it is going to be an awesome tour. I will miss an awful lot but I do have so much to look forward to in Sweden. To all of you that will see The Who, have an excellent time. I will be having one in Sweden.

Tracing My Family Tree

I have been tracing my family tree. If you have not ever done this, let me tell you it is very time consuming. I could be online for hours just researching names. It is a long drawn out process, but if you are lucky, one of your relatives will pop up and you will feel like you struck gold. The feeling of connecting with a loved one(though they have been gone for centuries) is a very rewarding experience.

My family roots are in Norway, Sweden, and Greece. Yes Marietta, I am only part Greek. But I identify most with that side of my family. Hence, Greekzoe. Searching in the Scandinavian countries, are such a joy. They kept records there unlike any other countries. I was able to locate two distant cousins and they helped me tremendously. I was able to trace back to 1590 and also found out that we are from nobility. That comes from our name which was Stålhandske. So I am told.

The picture above is my paternal grandmother's family when she was a little girl. She is the one in the lower middle. Taken in Norway, it was done around 1902. This is the earliest and only picture I have of her family. It needs to be restored. If you have someone with you that speaks the language you can always ask, What did they say? Huh? and so on. When I was in Sweden last year I felt like I was on Mars at times. It was very frustrating for me and I'm sure for the people who don't speak English to communicate.
So, I have decided to try and teach myself Swedish. It can get quite confusing for me. English is confusing to me sometimes and that is my first language. I know Greek but I am not fluent as I should be.
It is really confusing when one word means something in one language and something else in another. For instance, nai in Greek means yes. Nej in Swedish means no and in English it is a sound a horse makes.
If I can figure this whole language thing out, hopefully by October I will be able to at least understand enough Swedish to get by.
Wish me luck!

Purple Rachel

This is the first portrait I have done since I got my new glasses. I first was introduced to it in September of 1971. The first time I heard it I was in awe. I had never heard music like this before. I played it over and over. I couldn't get enough of it. I went to bed with the songs playing in my head and woke up the same way. I went to school and all I did was talk about The Who. Most of the people in my age group(I was 13) never even heard of The Who. Especially the girls. They all thought that David Cassidy and Donny Osmond was the only music(and I use that term lightly) to listen to. It was very frustrating. I was thankful that I did not fall into that blackhole. They all had their pictures pinned up in their lockers.

This is what I had:

Thank God for The Who!!
Thank God for Pete Townshend!!

How did you discover The Who?

Brant

This is a drawing I had done about 25 years ago. It is of a Mohawk Chief named Brant. His real name was Sa Ga Yeath Qua Pieth Tow. He was one of the four "Indian Kings" who had traveled to England to see Queen Anne in 1710.This is copied from a painting that was done when he was in England. The original artwork, which was done by a Dutch painter by the name of John Verelst, is hanging in a museum in Canada. I am not quite sure which one though. I wanted to draw him because I was so intrigued by his tattoos.

I did this in both pencil and colored pencil, using different techniques. It has been said that the eyes are the window to the soul.

These are the eyes of Pete Townshend. I drew this about 30 years ago. It is hard to think that it has been this long but I was in my last year of high school when I did this and that was in 1976. I always thought his eyes were the best to draw. Maybe because they are so mesmerizing!

This was done in ebony pencil, white crayon, eraser, My finger as a blender and a drawing tablet. The technique I used was kind of like a dot type stroke. I would take the pencil or crayon and peck at the paper, making little marks that when looked at from far away, was the shading on the subject matter. It was a long and tedious method as I had to always step away from the picture to see if it looked good from afar.

I have others that I will post in the coming weeks. As there is nothing new in the cat world this week.

Peter

This is a drawing I done of my son, Peter back in 1981. He was almost 4 years old at the time. It was done with an ebony pencil, gum eraser, my finger, and a drawing tablet. That was my technique at the time. I colored the background blue with a colored pencil at a later time. Mostly because of the fingerprints and smudges I could not erase.

I don't draw anymore. Just haven't had the 'inspiration' to do it. Also my eye hand coordination isn't what it used to be. He was born on May 15th, 2004. His mom is Patches.

Ari is the only kitten that survived out of the six that were born.

He has never lived outside and is the most loving cat we have in the house. I beleive it is because he was raised by humans. He does have his mischievious side too. He likes to tear up paper and kick a bunch of litter out of the box when he uses it. he also likes to walk around with a pack of feminine napkins when I forget to put them up. He will have them in shreds if i don't catch him quick enough.

He is a nut and he is very much loved, Even our Basset Harry will let Ari sleep in his bed and not disturb him. The other cats do not have that luxury. Ari Is a would have been feral cat had it not been for fate. She was VERY pregnant at the time, but I didn't realize how far along she really was. She is a small cat to begin with and her being a kitten herself, she did not appear VERY pregnant.
Anyway, I trapped her and put her in the crate where she would wait to be fixed the following week. On Saturday morning, I went in to feed her and clean her box when I saw she was in labor. Before I knew it, out came a kitten, then another, and another, and another. Four kittens. I had to get to work so I left Patches and her kittens with my family who looked after them. When I got to work I decided to call home and two more were born. Six kittens altogether.
This is Patches and her babies.

Patches was a very inexperienced mother and did not take very good care of her kittens. All but one died. His name is Ari. He lives with us. Patches had tamed down a lot after being spayed and we kept her too. She now lives a life of happiness and buns(rolls). Her favorite food.

                                                            Patches

Max

Hi, I'm Max. I used to be a feral cat. This is me a year ago when I lived on my own in the wild. I was a total mess. I had fleas, ear mites, worms, matted hair. Just a disaster!! Then I went to the house where the people that feed us live. I hung around there all the time. One day they let me in. Then they took me to see a doctor. I was poked and prodded. Very humiliating! After that I was cleaned up. No more fleas, ear mites, or worms. I even had a bath!! That sure made me feel good. Since then I have not been back outside. I don't care to either. It's either too cold or too hot. Inside is just right and there are no scary things inside either. Just this thing on wheels that makes awful noise and runs around on the floor sucking things up. But I can handle that.
Now I live a life of leisure. That was me then (above) and this is me now...

Aren't I handsome?

Puff Puff

This is the story of a dear sweet cat named Puff Puff.

She was born underneath our shed in August of 2003. She was in a litter of 7 kittens. Her mother died a few months after they were born.

Puff Puff was diferent than her brothers and sisters. She was a very friendly cat.

Whenever she saw me coming with the food she was the only one who would come running to me. After awhile, she let me pet her and we got to be good friends.

Puff Puff was blind in her left eye. She became that way from a bad infection she had gotten over the winter. Unfortunately, the vet could not do anything for her eye as it was too late. But Puff Puff didn't let that stop her. She wandered around in the woods and yards like she was the Queen of the neighborhood. And she was.

On September 27th, 2004, Puff Puff was found dead in the road in the early morning. My son was coming home from work when he found her and brought her home. We buried her in the yard she wandered around so happily that year.

I still miss seeing her around. She was small but her presence was and still is enormous. For this is Puff Puff's land.

Kiki

Hi, I'm Kiki. I am the original "feral cat".

I came from the woods in the back of the house 7 years ago. I was just 6 months old when I was discovered. My life outside was not for long. One day I was wandering around when 2 giant dogs started chasing me.

They were about to eat me alive when I saw this person out on the porch.

I decided to make a run and ran up the stairs to this person. I was scared at first but then realized that this person was not going to harm me.

He picked me up and then brought me inside.

I've been inside ever since.

As you can see from my pictures above, I eat well. Being an inside cat is much nicer than being an outside one. Harry, a Basset Hound. Fuzzy, a Shih Tzu and Shadow a Miniature Schnauzer mix. They live a life of leisure. Nice warm beds, plenty of food, and lots of love. But they don't have a blog. If the cats outside get one, then why can't they? So here they are. Today is their day. Only thing is that they have done nothing but sleep, go outside to poop and pee and eat and sleep some more. Probably because he has been fixed, whatever that means. They tell me that I will be fixed some day soon. We will see about that. That is Jack above my picture. Jack was waiting on the back poarch and as I came into the yard the others began to come around.

Martha, Little girl, the two Freds, and Brother came to say hi. Ethel was not there and neither was Fluffy. Ethel had come around earlier in the day so I was not worried about her. Then I was told that Fluffy had not been seen since the day I left. I called him but no Fluffy. Where could he have gone? I was hoping that he did not have the same fate as his brother Boy who disappeared back in June.

Today I had to find Fluffy. He did not come around for breakfast or the late afternoon meal. I decided to go to the woods and called him. I thought I heard some rustling in the leaves but it was not him. I called and called, no Fluffy. I went back in and not more than 5 minutes later, who comes out of the woods is Fluffy and Ethel. I fixed another plate of food and they came running. I was glad to see that he was alright. Earlier I heard gunfire from someone hunting and prayed it wasn't any of the cats. I am thankfull that they are all alright and still around.

It will be a long time before I go on another vacation away from home!

Away From Home

It has been 5 days since I have seen my outside kitties.
I am away in Sweden and will not be back for another week and a half.
I miss seeing them. She is a 2 year old female that was born under an out building on my property.
I trapped her last year and had her spayed. She pretty much stays in the woods at night. She will come to the edge when it is time to eat. She will only come near me when I feed them
Most of her siblings are gone. The only one that is still outside with her is her sister Georgia. Her other sister Patches has become one of my inside cats. And her brother Snowball lives in Sweden.
Martha was named after the Beatle song "Martha My Dear". One Eyed Jack
2.)Martha(my Dear)
3.)Fluffy
4.)Ethel
5.)Georgia
6.)Fred
7.)The other Fred
8.)Brother
9.)Lefki(aka Little Girl)
10)Olivia

There were more but they probably died as they are wild and wander the woods where they live behind my property.
I will be back on Monday.
